What is Madhyahan Sandhya?
Madhyahan Sandhya is the second and most important of the three-period Sandhyas described in Hinduism. "Sandhya" means the time of the meeting of two periods. Just as Pratah Sandhya is performed at sunrise and Sayan Sandhya is performed at sunset, similarly, Madhyahan Sandhya is performed at noon, when the sun is near its highest point in the sky. In the Vedic tradition, this time is considered very sacred for self-reflection, chanting, meditation and remembrance of the Supreme Soul.
According to the scriptures, Madhyahan Sandhya is considered a daily duty for people of the Dwija Varna. During this Sandhya, Suryadev, Gayatri Mata and Parambrahman are remembered. The noon hour is considered favorable for stability of mind and intellect, hence the special importance of chanting the Gayatri Mantra, offering offerings and meditating at this time has been stated.
Time of Midday Evening
The midday evening is usually performed around local noon (when the sun is at its highest point in the sky). The time around the midday time or Abhijit Muhurta shown in the Panchang is considered auspicious for the midday evening. There may be slight changes in its timing according to different traditions.
Religious Significance of Midday Evening
In the Vedic tradition, the midday evening is considered a means of self-purification, concentration of mind and spiritual connection with God. Through this Sandhya, a person spends some time in remembrance of the Supreme Lord in between his daily activities, which helps in maintaining spiritual balance.
Ritual of Madhyahan Sandhya
The Madhyahan Sandhya includes various religious sequences such as Achaman, Pranayama, Sankalp, Arghyadan, Gayatri Japa, Meditation and Prayer. There may be slight differences in its rituals in different Vedic branches and traditions, but Gayatri Upasana is considered its main part.
Madhyahan Sandhya and Gayatri Upasana
The chanting of Gayatri Mantra is the main part of the Madhyahan Sandhya. According to the scriptures, Gayatri Upasana brings purity of intellect, peace of mind and spiritual progress. For this reason, Madhyahan Sandhya holds special importance for Gayatri Sadhaks.
